What makes a good everyday watch

One watch, worn daily, should disappear on the wrist and still be noticed. Size, legibility, and versatility, in that order.

An everyday watch has a harder job than a dress watch. It must survive desks, door frames, rain, and weekends, and still look right with a suit.

Size is the first decision and the easiest to get wrong. A case between 36 and 40 millimeters suits most wrists; the watch should sit within the wrist, not overhang it.

Legibility is second. If you cannot read the time at a glance, the watch is jewelry, not a tool. Clean dials age better than busy ones.

Versatility is the tiebreaker. A steel bracelet dresses up and down; a leather strap commits the watch to one register. Buy the versatile one first.

How I track prices before I buy

I never pay the first price I see. The spreadsheet, the target number, and the rule that keeps sales from fooling me.
